First Full Day in Melbourne- 7/20/11

Working off the jet lag. Decided to get out and about. BTW, we beg your patience with the maintenance of our blog. It takes two computers and a tram ride in order to make a post! The first and third picture are of the street we are staying on in St.Kilda. We took the tram to the Arts Precinct just outside of downtown Melbourne. The tram on our street takes us right to the Victoria College for the Arts (where Jim is doing his grant work). From there we walked to the HUGE and free National Gallery, the Contemporary Arts Theatre, and on into the Central Business District (from here on the CBD) over the Yarra River bridge. The middle picture is of the Yarra River from the pedestrian bridge. The CBD is the equivalent of midtown Manhattan. Lots of commerce and malls. Melbourne is arranged pretty much like a grid with little off shooting streets called lanes. It is in the lanes that you find many interesting little shops, cafés, and galleries. Some are even designated “street art” lanes where graffiti is encouraged. There are even some famous street artist tags. Somewhere there is a Banksy tag I want to find. Not bad for a first day. Ended up passing out at 7 pm, waking at 3am...

We are here Down Undah!

Well, we made it! The 16 hour leg from LAX to Melbourne was an example of the weird time warp one experiences when you want to sleep but can't due to the fact that you have 18 inches of leg room. Came off the plane with ankles that looked like ski boots. No pics from this period. We have a little vanity afterall!
